Were your interpersonal relationships disrupted or questioned?
Writing Assignment #2: 12 Hours Without Technology In this course, you have read about interpersonal communication issues mainly in online communities. You have also read some commentary regarding the impact of technology on our relationships and communities; how reliant we are on various technologies and what this means for progress. The learning intentions of this writing assignment are twofold 1) You will find two scholarly, peer-reviewed journal articles on some aspect of online communication and use one course reading, in order to 2) analyze your experience going 12 hours without a chosen technology used primarily for communication, i.e. cell phone, computer (Internet, Facebook, Twitter). This writing assignment is designed to give you an opportunity to apply the concepts you have read about to this real life experiment. In a .doc (Word) document of about 800-1200 words (3-5 pages), using APA format and citations (hint: any references cited throughout the course are in APA format!), write a report covering the following: • Introduce and summarize briefly the scholarly, peer reviewed articles you found (i.e. what are the essential concepts, ideas, and/or insights presented by the author of the article? (NO quotations! If you want to use specific information, paraphrase and cite your source.) • Were you able to go 12 hours without your chosen technology? Why or why not? • Did you find this experiment difficult or easy? What did you choose to do instead of using your chosen technology? (For example, if you chose a cell phone, how did you contact people?) • What conclusions can you make based upon your experience with this experiment? (For example, overall, were you inconvenienced? Were your interpersonal relationships disrupted or questioned? Did you appreciate your chosen technology more or did you feel a certain feeling of freedom without it?) • In explaining your conclusions, what connections can you make to the research or information presented in the three readings you are using for this assignment? (Again, NO quotations! If you want to use specific information, paraphrase and cite your source.) Peer-reviewed, scholarly sources generally do not include websites, magazines or newspapers. Sometimes, these articles will reference or cite research that is in a scholarly journal, and so you should always try to find the direct source. Please see the helpful tips on how to search for academic journal articles and how to write your paper in APA format located in the course site for assistance. Please take your time to write a thoughtful assignment. I expect your writing to be at a college level – this means proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation (no “texting”!). See the grading rubric on the next page for specific grading information. Submit your paper in the Dropbox in the course site. Make sure to take a screenshot indicating the date and time of your submission. So, in case there is an issue with a missing assignment, you have proof that it was submitted.
