Assignment 2: Prospectus Submission
The prospectus outlines the proposed investigation (a 515 page paper that is used to explain the candidate\’s research to other students, potential committee members, and campus administrators. A copy of the prospectus will be attached to the Petition for Establishing a Doctoral Dissertation Committee to allow campus administrators to make informed decisions about assigning an appropriate committee member to your study.
The prospectus begins with a cover sheet and should provide enough information to help administrators and prospective committee members determine if their interests and backgrounds are appropriate for serving on the committee. The components of this narrative should include:
The problem to be addressed, the significance of the problem, the purpose of the proposed study.
An initial review of the literature related to the selected research topic, sufficient to inform the candidate of what is, and is not, known about the topic.
An initial set of research question(s) and hypotheses as appropriate.
Anticipated research methodology which includes population and sample, procedures and measures, hypotheses, level of significance, and statistical tests.
A short reference list of key articles, books, etc., related to the research area.
It is advisable for candidates to conference with the dissertation chair about the prospectus and your plan for the research (timeline) in the first week of the term. Many candidates enter this unit with a preliminary prospectus that was developed in a prior course. This may or may not be sufficient to submit as your actual prospectus for this unit. Discuss it with your chair and make any revisions suggested by your chair before submission. Additionally, any questions regarding the prospectus should be addressed to your dissertation chair.
All written assignments and responses should follow APA rules for attributing sources.
Consider the Prospectus Evaluation Criteria that your chair will use as part of his/her evaluation of your prospectus. (View link with Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat.)
