Paper on Issues in Mathematics Teaching and Learning
Research a particular issue or topic that is relevant to the teaching and learning of
mathematics in the senior secondary classroom.
Write a 2200-word paper outlining the key issues with reference to the literature, clearly describing implications for teachers and learners. Imagine your audience is practising teachers.
The paper should include each of the following:
an introduction which identifies the topic or issue to be considered;
a review of the literature (to include at least 8 references);
practical advice for teachers including teaching ideas;
a reference list; and
a suitable resource list that could include websites, textbooks and other teaching
materials.
Optional you may include worksheets and other resource materials in an Appendix.
However, these must not be included in the word count.
Assessment criteria:
1. evidence of reading and using the assessment proforma to assess 2 student essays;
2. introduction to and clarity of topic/issue;
3. relevance of the topic/issue to mathematics teaching and learning in the senior
secondary school;
4. justification of choice of topic/issue from a personal perspective;
5. appropriateness of the the references consulted;
6. skill in analysis and evaluation of sources;
7. interpretation of claims and evidence contributing to advice for teachers;
8. appropriateness of resource list; and
9. a high standard of writing including technical aspects such as formatting, care in
quotation and referencing, spelling, grammar, and clarity of style.
