For your second essay, you are to write a dividing and classifying essay following the guidelines provided in MWL for writing an essay of this type and all the suggestions for writing an essay in Chapters 1 and 2 of C&C. Thinking back on all our discussions and your reading for the past two weeks about virtue ethics, please compose an essay by the end of the week to offer some insight into what are at least three different visions of what makes for a happy and fulfilled life depicted in the two comedies weve read and watched: Lysistrata and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.
Provide your own distinctive name for each vision of what constitutes authentic human happiness that you discover depicted in one or the other or both of these two comedies. Be sure that each vision is distinct from the other visions even if they may share some similarities.
Base your description of each vision of happiness exclusively on the details in Lysistrata and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. You may not agree with any one of the visions of happiness you identify and describe. This essay is supposed to be about what you discover in these plays about how people conceive of happiness, regardless of what your personal opinion is. The happiness you describe is supposed to be a version of the eudaimonia described by Stites and van Hooft and Aristotle; this is not just feeling happy. This is happiness as the ultimate goal and result of a meaningful and fulfilling human life.
As much as possible, try to use the process of writing this essay to discover what those conceptions of happiness really are. In other words, forget what you know you know about happiness and see what new insights you may discover about it by wallowing in the concrete details of these comedies. The more original and unexpected your discoveries about the vision of happiness to be found in these comedies, the better.
