Answer these questions:
Research is built around a research problem. What is a research problem?
In this article, what is the research problem?
How did the researcher justify that this problem needs to be studied? In other words, why did the researcher think that this was an important matter to study?
Who is the audience that the author says will benefit from this study? If there is none mentioned, who do you think might benefit from reading this study and why?
Why is it important in a research study to review the literature?
In this article, what purpose does the literature review serve?
What function does the purpose statement in a research study serve?
Does this study have a stated purpose? If so, where is it located in the study?
Typically, researchers follow the purpose statement with research questions. Are there clearly stated research questions? Where are they found in the article?
What are at least three of the ways that researchers can collect data?
Did this study have more than one type of data?
In this article, how did the researcher collect data?
How did the researcher analyze the data in the study?
How did the researcher present the analysis of the data in the discussion section?
Note: The 14 questions are about the first article by Orellana. So just answer the questions based on that article. That, combined with the 2nd article analysis should make up your 3 page paper.
Part 2: Analysis of an Article
The article that will be used for Part 2 of this assignment is Asmussen, K. J. & Creswell, J. W. (1995). Campus Response to a Student Gunman. The Journal of Higher Education, 66/5 (use the attached document titled \”Gunman\”).
The purpose of this assignment is to help you identify good research. It is the next step after answering the questions about the Orellana (2006) article. Remember, there are several parts of a research article that are important to include (the six steps of research): problem, literature, purpose, data collection, data analysis, and reporting (Creswell, 2008, p. 15). The goal of this assignment is to help you gain a better understanding of how to analyze research; so when you conduct a literature review for a research project you will know which articles are quality, research-based articles as well as how to report your own research.
The main points that should be reported in your analysis include the six parts of research. We want you to be familiar enough with quality research that you are able to identify the parts and able to describe/explain what you are reading. The figure on page 2 of this assignment will help you distinguish between the qualitative and quantitative approach to research.
Your analysis should be no longer than 3 double-spaced pages, 12-point Times Roman font. Please use APA and refer to either the APA Guide or the Purdue University APA website found at https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/.
