Write an argumentative essay on either that prohibition of hard drugs such as heroin and cocaine maximizes utility across the whole society or that it fails to maximize utility.
Main Argument (350 words): With reference to what we read about utilitarianism, Milton Friedman’s “It’s Time to End the War on Drugs” and James Q. Wilson’s “Against the Legalization of Drugs”, argue either that prohibition of hard drugs such as heroin and cocaine maximizes utility (creates the greatest amount of happiness for the greatest number of individuals) across the whole society or that it fails to maximize utility.
Objection (300 words): This is what a skeptic might say to challenge your position (what Friedman might say if you are arguing in favor of prohibition, what Wilson might say if you are arguing against prohibition). A strong objection is one that takes time to consider the evidence in favor of your opponent’s view.
Response (350 words): This is your chance to defend your position by explaining why the skeptic’s challenge is not persuasive.
