Consider the following scenario: Darla has been married to her husband, Syd, for 25 years. They have 2 children and live in a nice suburban neighborhood. Throughout the marriage there has been a history of domestic violence. Darla was repeatedly beaten by her husband. She was frequently slapped, punched, kicked, and forced to have sex. Syd sometimes used weapons to beat her with, such as a bat or bottle. One day after a particularly brutal beating, Syd went into the bedroom to take a nap. After Darla was sure he was sleeping, she took a .25 caliber handgun and shot him three times in the back of the head.
