Instructions: In the short film, “For Man Must Work, or, The End of Work,” the suggestion is made that human labour will soon be made largely obsolete by technology. Cape Breton Island is presented as one example of this, as the closing of the mines and the steel plant have had a highly negative economic impact on this area. Write an essay that responds to this claim with reference to your own home town. Do you think that it is true that human labour will become obsolete? What kind of impact has industrialization and/or De-industrialization had on your home? What future technological changes do you anticipate in the near future, and how do you think this will affect the lives of people in this area? Remember that this is a general topic and that it will be up to you to generate a specific thesis statement about it (you do not necessarily need to answer each of the above questions).
This is NOT a research essay, but you may make reference to the film, and you may choose to find other articles on this topic, provided that you cite them properly according to MLA Guidelines.
Remember that an essay is always an argument of some form; you must not simply describe the situation, you must establish your own point of view on it. An “A” paper is one that clearly develops a distinct position about this question and makes effective use of evidence in order to support its argument.
Style Guidelines:
1) You should NOT submit a title page. You should put your name, the course number, my name and the date in the top left corner of your first page.
2) Your paper should have an interesting and informative title that both gives a sense of what your argument will be and makes me want to read your paper.
3) The body of your paper should be double spaced; you should NOT leave any additional space between paragraphs.
4) You should use 12-point Times New Roman font.
