What is my writing style?
Your objective is to write a brief essay on your own writing style in relation to others. It should be about two or three double-spaced pages (600-900 words) long, and establish a clear thesis that answers this question: what is my writing style? Here are some hints for how to approach this issue:
1. Think about who you are, or who you plan to be, and discuss what you like about other writers’ styles that you hope to cultivate in yourself. What do you admire about your favorite writers, and how do you plan to emulate those stylistic traits you like? What makes these styles (yours and those of your favorite writers) effective in a particular genre?
2. Think about your writing style in terms of its purpose. What do you want your writing to do, and what gets that job done? How do other people do it?
3. Think about how you effectively convince an audience to accept your point of view. What brings them in? What convinces them of your credibility and values (ethos), the significance of your point (pathos), and the soundness or your reasoning (logos)? Whom do you admire for writing persuasively?
