What do Carters transformations show us, if anything, about the originals?
In her collection The Bloody Chamber, Angela Carter transforms fairy tales such as Snow White or The Beauty and the Beast by maintaining certain elements of the original tales and by altering others in surprising and sometimes even disturbing ways. Using examples from at least two stories in her collection that we read, analyze the way in which they comment on or relate to their source material. What do Carters transformations show us, if anything, about the originals? Why transform a fairy tale in the first place? What do Carters stories show us about the relationship between men and women and the roles that they play? What do these stories show us about love, sex, and desire? In an interview, Carter once claimed that she was not trying to

negate or counter the original fairy tales with her versions, but rather to draw out something latent or buried in the originals themselves. Do you think she was successful, if that was her goal?
