What are Euthyphro’s main reasons for why he is indicting his father, and why does Socrates find these unacceptable?
INTRODUCTION TO PHILOSOPHY MINI-¬‐ASSIGNMENT ONE: EUTHYPHRO
• Read assigned readings in Before and After Socrates and Euthyphro in the Plato book Five Dialogues.
• I also recommend viewing the videos that I produced (the quality is low, don’t
judge!), certainly taking the time to view the one on Euthyphro.

THE MINI-¬‐ASSIGNMENT:
In a page or two please address the following:
• What are Euthyphro’s main reasons for why he is indicting his father, and why does Socrates find these unacceptable? (NOTE: this is not asking what Euthyphro’s father did, but how Euthyphro responds to Socrates when asked why he feels justified in taking his father to trial.
• What other implicit or analogous messages do you think this dialogue is suggesting? (Consider authority and opinion.)
• What do you think about the gist of this dialogue.
You needn’t be overly formal, but you should be clear. In the end, I am looking for evidence of good thinking, not just your ability to regurgitate what the text says. (In the context of reading the Euthyphro hopefully you can see why that would be absurd.)
In short, I want to see your ability to report what you understand to be Socrates’ arguments and what this means with regard to living philosophically. Single or double space is fine. Use standard margins. Please don’t try to tweak fonts, spacing, and margins to make your paper look bigger. I want you to have fun with this! Thinking about what we all do and why we do it should be joyous and life affirming, not burdensome and life denying. That’s what philosophy is very much about!
