At the age of eighteen he became involved in an altercation with one much older than he was and was forced to kill him in self-defense. Shortly after Craig joined the French Canadians to start a journey up the Missouri river on a trading expedition, but on their way there they encountered trappers and just as fast as he joined the French Canadians he now switched his roles and became a full-fledged trapper. Craig spent many years along the rivers with the natives skinning animals and collecting money for his exchanges and bargaining.
