In the world of exercise, warm-up exercises help people get ready for strenuous exercise. It is a way to help prepare the muscles and the body for a workout and to prevent injury. This analogy fits well with group work too. In the world of group work, warm-up exercises help people get ready for an emotionally or intellectually challenging experience and help prevent psychological injury, confusion, embarrassment, or range of other negative reactions.
This assignment is designed to give you an opportunity to select a warm-up (or ice breaker type) exercise and lead a live, small group through the exercise.
You will need to ask at least 3 people to help you with this assignment. It is essential that you explain that you are asking them to help you practice group facilitation skills in a supportive, friendly environment. For this assignment, you may ask family members, friends, neighbors, and co-workers.
Who you ask to help you with this assignment is not essential because the goal is for YOU to practice leading a warm-up exercise with people. Warm up exercises and ice breakers are simple, easy, lighthearted exercises to help people prepare for group work. Depending on the exercise you choose, this could last as few as 10 minutes or as long as 30 minutes.
You may choose an exercise in Chapter 7.
