In this paper you will develop skills of
style, flow, and rhythm necessary to produce successful descriptive writing. This form of writing is used in
marketing, creative writing, journalism, and many other professions. You will select an episode from your
life that has changed how you view the world – for better or worse – and you will focus on descriptive
details (sight, smell, feelings, sounds, colors, physical reactions (thrills, nausea, etc.), emotional reactions
(ecstasy, dejection, etc.)).
Strong verbs (illustrates HOW someone does something — “dashed” not “ran”; “glared” not “frowned”)
Evocative adjectives (engages the senses — sight, taste, touch, hearing, etc.)
