Given the social and economic crises in the 17th century, people were looking for stability in their governments. Louis XIV, Frederick William, and other monarchs used the situation to increase their authority and power. On the other hand, in England, the Puritans overthrew Charles I and declared a republic. Eventually, England did return to a monarchy, but with limited powers.
