Using the information in the text and audio lectures, how would you define communication?

How are you able to apply the effects of communication traditions and contexts in your life? Mr. Zeigler gives interesting examples in his code switching and evolution of SPSS video tapes. Either comment on these examples or provide your own examples. Make sure you link your examples to theory.

Why do ethics matter?

AFTER YOUR RESPONSE, please discuss your opinion about the following response:

"I would define communication as the process of relaying a message to another person through some medium of communication. Methods can include verbal, type, or picture messages, but they all get some point across which is the interpreted by the receiver.

The effects of communication traditions are important to understand as they relate to ethical practices of communication. Communication is the primary component of every day life. Without effective communication, businesses and relationships in each facet of the world would cease to exist. This past summer, I spent several weeks traveling through ten different countries. As a rather uninformed tourist, I frequently felt out of place as each country I visited had different traditions and customs for everything from attire to dining styles. Here in the United States, I feel that it is important to obtain a brief understanding of some of the main cultures of the world to effectively communicate with others in fields of medicine, education, religion, politics, and technology. It is too easy to offend a person of a different heritage by simply not knowing. In Mr. Zeigler’s video about code switching, he used the example of flicking someone off and how it has been interpreted to mean something bad. Understanding communication theory helps to raise self-awareness and make sense of personal life experiences. For example, in Malaysia it is offensive if a person points with their index finger. Here in America, if a restaurant employee points to the restroom in this way it could unintentionally offend someone. By increasing knowledge and self-awareness there is less of a chance to negatively communicate.

Ethics are important to communication because it is sometimes hard to distinguish between right and wrong. By raising awareness and understanding the essentials of ethics, communication can be more effective."

DB2: Please discuss the following questions using information gained from the readings and from Mr. Zeigler’s audio tapes.

a. How does having a theory help you see things from a different perspective? In your life, how have you developed a theory based on your personal experience? How do you establish goals in a theory and how does the theory affect the way you see the world?

b. Where does research fit into theory building?

AFTER YOUR RESPONSE, please discuss your opinion about the following response:

" Having a theory helps you see things in a different perspective because theories open your eyes, or help you to take your glasses off as Mr. Ziegler would say. Theories open our eyes to looking at situations in different perspectives because once we believe in a theory it helps to understand the situation we are in, or were once in. It gives us the ability to look at situations differently, one way based on theory, and the other based upon the way we used to think or feel.

I have developed theories in my life through personal experiences such as relationships and athletic experiences. Relationships, not limited to intimate ones, have taught me to embrace the theory of treat others the way you want to be treated, because what you give is what you receive. This holds true to my perspectives of relationships, the more I give, I feel like the more I will receive, though it might not be right away, it will in the long run. Through athletic experience I believe in the theory, what does not kill you will only make you stronger. I have been pushed through hard practices where I literally thought I had been pushed to the limit and could not go any harder, yet I made it through, and I would leave practice knowing I was a stronger athlete for pushing my limits.

I goals I establish through my theories are based on the out comes. If a theory holds true to my beliefs then I will embrace that theory and use make it my goal to relate to it everyday. This affects the way I see the world because if the theories I believe in reach the goals i have for them, then I turn to these theories everyday, meaning they truly reflect the way I live day to day in my world.

Research fits into theory building through observational studies which explicitly define the concepts of a theory. This is important in theory building, because the stronger the evidence a theory holds true, then the more reliable the theory becomes."

DB3: In the audio and course notes, Mr. Zeigler asks the question, What does it all mean? He says that the Symbolic Interaction theory and the Coordinated Management of Meaning theory are interpersonal and interpersonal theories that show how people develop meaning in relationships. Discuss the following questions based on the readings, video, audio and your personal experience. You are expected to apply the assumptions of these theories to your personal experience to show that you understand how the theories work and the differences and similarities between them. Mr. Zeigler gives an excellent discussion of self-concept in the video, Reflected Appraisals.

1. How do you create meaning in your relationships? Discuss how the meaning you create works in your communication with others (interpersonal) and in your establishment of your self-concept (interpersonal)?

2. How do you establish rules for shared meaning in your conversations?

AFTER YOUR RESPONSE, please discuss your opinion about the following response:

"
Through interaction with others I am able to create meaning while in the very midst of conversation. I am finding with the information provided in this class and surrounding this field of study how most people, inclusive of myself, communicate less than we realize. Not only is meaning derived from interaction with others, but it has to be the type of communication which is understood by others. I shimmer at all the times I thought I really communicated and found I only scratched the surface in doing so. As I have grown older and experienced troubles and trying times in my life, I understand how personal experience has taught me and brought me to a better place. When we communicate a message to someone we don’t always know how the message is interpreted until further in the interaction. Sometimes we find they didn’t really understand as we thought they did, but continuing to interact afforded us the opportunity for meaning to surface. My self concept has been developed and continues to develop as I think healthy thoughts about myself and the thoughts of those who have expressed what they think of me. I can truly say I have a greater awareness of self and society due to interpersonal and interpersonal interactions in my life. One rule I always strive to live by in conversation is to use my every fiber to seek to understand others truthfully. Through the communication of my own experiences as well as the experiences of others, I am able to establish shared meaning in conversation and thereby create a good social environment to share with others."
