Assignment: Annotated Bibliography
(Term Project, Part II)
In this assignment you will develop an annotated bibliography for your chosen topic. The goal is for you to use the search tools and strategies, combined with the critical reading approaches outlined in Moodle, to produce a more detailed examination of your topic. This also helps you start organizing your research in a systematic way.
An annotated bibliography is more than just a reference list. It includes brief summaries of those references and describes the authors main arguments or conclusions. It also situates the material in the context of the research topic. An annotation should give enough information to make a reader decide whether to read the complete work. In other words, if the reader were exploring the same topic as you, is this material useful and if so, why? (UMUC Library).
Specifically, you are to use the various search tools covered in this course to find 4 academic/scholarly sources, and 1 popular/professional source related to your topic, for a total of 5 sources. You will then extract and summarize the relevant information according to the criteria below.
The components:
A. Your Research Statement
B. An APA Style Reference for Your Topic Source
In Week 2 you submitted your Topic Selection assignment, and identified the source where you got your topic. Prepare an APA Style Reference for that source. This is not part of your annotated bibliography.
C. APA Style Annotated Bibliography of your Information Sources
1. A complete APA Style reference for each of your 5 information sources (4 academic/scholarly AND 1 professional/popular). You will then have the beginnings of a properly-formatted reference list for the final term project.
2. Following each APA Style reference, provide a short summary (4-5 sentences) which:
identifies what type of source it is (book, article, website, report, etc.)
describes the key arguments or conclusions made by the author
relates how the source is relevant to your topic and your research question
In other words, it is neither a simple list of the main ideas, nor a copy/paste of an abstract. Think about how this source relates to you area of interest, why its useful, and how it might help you accomplish a well-researched, well-written paper.
3. Make sure that these 5 sources are in alphabetical order as per APA Style guidelines.
Submission Guidelines:
? Upload your Annotated Bibliography to the Assignment in Moodle. A document version must be submitted to Moodle.
? If you prefer a different approach, you can in addition provide annotations in oral form by making an appointment to meet online with one of the instructors. This oral presentation will be evaluated using the same criteria and the higher mark of the two will be recorded.
? Regardless of your approach, please ensure that you include all of the information.
