The purpose of this topic is to explore the rolls graphic and web design can have in virtual and augmented reality. AR (Augmented reality) has been around for a little while now and made it huge impact with the Pokmon Go mobile application. While mobile phones are expanding and constantly upgrading, the future of possibilities seems to be endless. VR (Virtual reality) has been around even longer, and always seemed like it was portrayed in the movies as futuristic. Well, the future is here and now.
The difference between VR and AR is literally perception. While VR creates a simulated environment, AR is the technology that superimposes a computer-generated image on a user\’s view of the real world, thus providing a composite view. Instead of viewing a screen in front of them, VR users are immersed and able to interact with 3D worlds.
Playstation VR has been out since October of 2016. It seems that gaming and videos are the obvious direction for AR and VR, there has to be room for graphic designers in this growing media. I recently had an interview for a graphic design position at a start-up company wanting to create a new AR/VR media company and they were very interested in me to create logos and packaging for their company. This could be just the start of a beautiful and meaningful relationship. Perhaps character design, information design such as booklets and instruction manuals are also possible. Graphic designers would make excellent art directors over game artist and videographers because of the principles of art and design we are taught. I am interested to find out what the future will hold for graphic design in Virtual and Augmented Reality.
