Explain Indigenous Policy Rewrite and Commentary

Order Description

Task

Choose a piece of policy that relates to or has an impact upon Indigenous people. You have had a chance to see how Indigenous worldviews might shape the way in which people approach policy writing. Your task now is to outline how and justify why you would make changes to the policy so that Indigenous worldviews underpin the policy and its application and outcomes.

There is a great deal of material in the Health, Education and Natural Resource Management spheres so these are obvious areas to start. However, if you are familiar with other areas of policy work in government or even private industry, then feel free to focus your work there.

If you used an appropriate policy document in Assignment Two, then you may want to use this as the basis for your work in Assignment Three. If your argument in Assignment Two was that the policy you investigated did not represent Indigenous people appropriately, feel free to reuse the policy in this assessment.

If you are working with a large document, then you will probably only want to review and rewrite a relevant section (or sections) of the document. You may want to discuss this with your lecturer, so you know you are not doing too much work (or not enough).

Preparation

Preparation in this instance involves you choosing a relevant policy, reading it and deciding on the fundamental changes that need to be made so that Indigenous worldviews underpin the policy.

Hint: You might want to consider Assignment 2 and the work you did there before you finalise your choice on the policy you intend to examine.

Use the following as a way of both preparing yourself and for structuring your work:

Write an introduction that outlines the purpose of the policy and its sphere of influence. include in your introduction a summary of the importance of including Indigenous world views into the policy and making them explicit.

Build on this by writing a few paragraphs that summarise the literature on Indigenous world view and their importance in including them in policy formulation. You may want to use the same writing you did in Assignment Two and address any commentary you received to ensure it is better.

Now examine the policy and look at the sections that need to be worked on. For each section you review, you need to identify the original wording, your changed wording and a commentary on why the changes are necessary and what they intend to acheive. How you present this is up to you, but we want to see the old, the new and the justification for the change.

Presentation

Your presentation for this assignment will be a short essay that includes:

an introduction;
a short review of literature that argue for the importance of the inclusion of Indigenous perspectives in policy and any background information and context on the policy document you have chosen;
a short review of any commentary literature that sits around the policy document you have chosen that supports your argument for change*;
your changes to policy and the associated commentary;
a conclusion that reiterates the important take away messages you want the reader to have in relation to the essay;
a reference list including all articles and sources you have cited in your writing of the essay;
a praxiography – a list of the actions you have taken as a consequence of your work on this paper.Check out the notes in Module One to find out more about this requirement. Consider at least three actions to be included in your praxiography for this assignment.
*You may wish to recycle information and text from Assignment Two into these parts, with editing and reflection on any comments and critique you may have received from your lecturer.

Ensure that you use an approved coversheet for this assignment and that the coversheet and essay are contained within the one document. Your coversheet will include a declaration regarding the acknowledgement of sources in your work. No work will be marked without a coversheet that includes this declaration.

Please find the previous assignment attached, the policy explored was Assimilation…. I am confident there enough to explore this further on this essay. If not the Aboriginal Protection Policy has similarities, but would prefer Assimilation.
