Scenario:
You are employed in the Finance Division of a large multinational consulting firm. The Director of Foresight has learned that you followed the specialist pathway Carbon Management and Entrepreneurship (CME). Following a brief meeting, she has asked you to prepare a report scoping out exactly what CME is all about in theory, and how its insights might be applied to the organization that employs you both. She would in particular like to know more about greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and removals, what emissions trading is, and how the climate change agenda is likely to evolve over the short, medium and long term. She is particularly interested in the commercial opportunities for your mutual employer.

Your task:
In light of the above, using examples of your choice as well as drawing on theories and concepts from across the module your task is to provide a report for her with suitable recommendations. In particular, the report should include the following as a minimum:
? An outline of the development of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) and an awareness of other emerging trading schemes around the world
? Clearly differentiating and defining the difference between Scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG emissions
? Possible consulting opportunities which might arise as a result of engaging with the carbon reduction/removal agenda for external clients
? An outline of appropriate measures that the employer might adopt internally to account for GHG emissions and removals
? Suggestions as to how GHG emission reduction might be incorporated into the employers risk management function
? The benefits reputational, financial, regulatory etc. that might accrue to the employer of a GHG reduction corporate strategy

Learning Outcome:
On successful completion of this assignment you will be able to:
1. Understand the drivers for Carbon Management the emissions targets and reporting requirements at an international and national level.
2. Identify the key steps in a robust and successful Carbon Management strategy and be able to define Carbon Footprinting.
3. Evaluate the use of Carbon Impact Assessments in decision making and recognize the use of Project Accounting within international
greenhouse gas emissions mitigation and reporting.
4. Apply knowledge to develop, implement & monitor an action plan in order to achieve a measurable reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, including identification of KPIs & the characteristics of successful
change management.
5. Understand and analyse the concept of carbon offsetting, the role that
offsetting plays within a robust Carbon Management strategy, and be able to apply selection criteria for purchasing offsets.
