Evaluate the social-cultural issues that are influencing adverse selection in insurance markets.

Prior to engaging in this discussion, please read Chapter 12 in the text, read the Rice (1997) and the Korda and Eldridge (2011) articles, and review any relevant Instructor Guidance. It is suggested that you also take a moment to review a few of the recommended articles to glean any potential helpful information. Opportunism in health care is especially perceptible in the health insurance markets. Consider the area in which you live, specifically your state and local communities. Evaluate the social-cultural issues that are influencing adverse selection in insurance markets. Propose some strategies for reducing adverse selection in health insurance within these markets. Develop a microeconomic model that is responsive to your local service demands. Communicate how these issues are relevant to the economics of the greater U.S. health care system. What are the future implications with the Affordable Care Act?

Guided Response: Read several of your classmates’ posts and provide a substantive written response to at least two of your peers. In your responses, imagine that you are an associate director of a health insurance company and have been given the charge of examining how the Affordable Care Act will allow your company to thrive and grow under the increasing constraints of reduced reimbursement rates. How might your classmate’s proposed strategies affect your plans? In what ways would the microeconomic model your classmate described adversely affect your profit margin? In what ways might the model benefit your profitability? Provide at least one reference to support each of your positions. In addition to responding to at least two other students’ posts, it is recommended that you reply to at least one person who responded to your original post by either respectfully defending your conclusions or by listing how you might implement the changes your classmate suggested.
