Module 5: Corrections: A Misnomer?
In this module, we will explore the portion of the criminal justice system known as community corrections. Here, offenders are not incarcerated but under supervision by a criminal justice agency while being able to live within the community. The goal of community corrections is not only to protect the community from victimization but to aid in the rehabilitation of the offender. There are several types of community corrections but the most common are probation and parole.
The second component of the module is to discuss whether prison is preventative or promoting of crime and criminal behavior. As you will learn, the answer is unclear with any degree of certainty because the relationship between prison and crime rates is not as simple as preventing or promoting crime but is affected by other factors. One argument for prison promoting crime is the social learning of crime and criminality for individuals while in prison. Being surrounded by other criminals for long periods of time leads to further learning of criminal behavior and individuals may be more likely to recidivate upon release.
Then we will briefly discuss ways to improve correctional supervision. Considering the strain of increasing numbers of offenders being incarcerated and resources being limited finding ways to improve the system is incredibly important. Utilizing evidence-based practices to determine what works can help agencies target their resources into areas that are more likely to lead to success.
Finally, we will explore one of the many on-going debates in community corrections. Success has generally been defined by recidivism rates. Butts and Schiraldi (2018), however, suggested that we should rethink this as the measure of success. Recidivism is a too simplistic (i.e., people either recidivate or they do not) but the reality is that the reasons individuals recidivate is far more complicated.

For Your Success & Readings
Here are some tips to help you tackle this module! You will not only have to answer your weekly discussion question but you also have a 3-4 page critical thinking assignment
Review the Discussion Question and Critical Thinking Assignment prior to starting your required readings so you can start determining the areas where you should focus while you are reading.
Make your substantive posting as early in the week as possible but remember, to qualify for full credit, initial comments should be posted no later than Thursday at midnight. You should also make sure to post two equally substantive replies to two of your fellow classmates’ responses. To qualify for full credit, follow up comments should be posted no later than Sunday at midnight. Any comments posted later than Sunday at midnight will not receive credit.
Engage with the assigned and recommended readings.
Critical Thinking assignments are also due this week. Please choose from one of the options provided for submission. The assignments ask that you prepare a 3-4-page paper utilizing at least 3 credible sources. In your submission, you should utilize peer-reviewed sources that support your position on the given topic.
Reach out to your instructor with any questions regarding course material or for assistance with questions regarding your critical thinking assignment or your upcoming portfolio assignment.
While engaging in research for your portfolio project it is helpful to start preparing the bibliography along with your outline. The outline and bibliography will be due in Week 6.
