Anyshire Fire and Rescue Service (AFRS) on KLE under assessment
Case study: Anyshire Fire and Rescue Service (AFRS) on KLE under assessment
Individualacademicreport(rigorous;analytical; critically informed; links theory, evidence and practice)
The task
A critically informed academic report to the CFO/SMT for consideration at next strategic planning meeting
To incorporate:
– A critical evaluation of the current approach to the management of labour at AFRS
in light of pertinent issues raised in the case study.
– A clear explanation and justification of the HR interventions that you consider could deliver the High Performance labour management outcomes that the CFO aims to achieve. Within this you should fully discuss the limitations of these interventions.
– An explanation, with reasons, of how you would manage the introduction of these interventions.
Bear in mind what CFO/SMT are keen to know (ways of securing cost savings through operational flexibility, enhanced staff performance and commitment to good relations with staff)
Assessment Guidance
Read the case study carefully several times
Highlight / underline important facts to help you to identify the current approach to labour mngt/current issues etc.
Bear in mind that the case may be factually correct, but some statements made by individuals can and should be interpreted (e.g. perspective/prior experience may influence what is stated)
Identify the key issues and try to distinguish the most important /critical from the more trivial issues/problems (if any).
Then identify the features of the current labour management strategy in evidence at AFRS try to think about how this current approach might be linked with the issues/problems that you have identified.
You then need to develop your analysis of why these issues are relevant /important /linked to broader debates around issues you have been asked to report on : this is when you draw on the modules theoretical, conceptual and empirical insights to identify, explain, then analyse the issue (so must use module readings)
Having identified and analysed the issues you then need to consider alternative HR solutions and their limitations (using your module readings to justify/support)
Then consider how your suggested interventions might be managed (again with reasons)
Writing the report [1]
Summary (200 words)
Identify key problems/issues; short summary of analysis; main conclusion(s) [like an abstract]
Findings (950 words)
Critical evaluation of current labour mngt approach(es); explain facts/issues in light of theoretical etc. insights from module (so needs to be referenced); try to identify any underlying problems e.g. a fact may be symptomatic of an underlying weakness with current approach
Discussion (950 words)
Summarise key problems (in light of findings); consider possible HR interventions/ solutions linked to HP labour management outcomes (based on module insights/readings etc.) and remember critical evaluation avoid just managerially-led/ unitary style: need for analytical stance in your evaluation of the possibilities
Conclusion (200 words)
Sum up the main points from Findings and Discussion
Recommendations (500 words)
Identify and discuss, with justification, what HR interventions you consider to be most appropriate in achieving CFO/SMT aims. You need to integrate theoretical insights /reference to relevant readings here as they will form an important part of your reasoning and justification.
Implementation (250 words)
Explain, with reasons, how you would introduce the changes that you recommend. Try to explain what you would do, why, when and how? If possible, indicate timescales and resource implications.
