Find and analyze a current reputable secondary news source that references a primary scientific article relating to body weight or physical fitness.
How do you know if the source is reputable? From lesson 1 you should remember that a secondary source is usually written by a journalist who has read the scientific paper while a primary source in science is the paper written by the scientist who actually did the scientific study. Primary journal articles resemble the lab reports you may have written is a lab course. Please include the following in your analysis. Keep in mind that this is a 50 point assignment so please be sure you understand the article and provide enough depth and detail.
1. Indicate the title and url of your article.
2. Who did the original study and where was it conducted? Were their results published in a peer reviewed primary journal article? If so, include the citation. If not, why not?
3. Hypothesis-What were the scientists trying to test or demonstrate?
4. Conclusions-What conclusions did the scientists have from their study?
5. Validity-Describe the validity of their work. Did they have a large sample size? What type of study did they conduct? (Animal study, Observational/epidemiological, Case control, clinical trials/intervention studies) Did they analyze their results with statistical methods?
6. Future studies and implications-What other studies might they need to do to further test their hypothesis, and what questions do they still have? What impact will this research have within the field, and to the general public?
7. Explain any background information that you needed in order to understand the study more fully. How is the article connected with course content? What did you think was most interesting about this study? Explore and explain your thinking.
