Discuss “E.coli”,what it needs and where you find It.
Population growth lab report
1.) Title Page – includes the title of your report, your name, your class, and the date. – The title should be more creative and descriptive than simply “Lab Report” or “E.coli”
2.) Introduction – Tell me about E. coIi, what it needs, where you find It, etc, Be thorough: I don’t want 2 or 3 sentences, I want 2 or 3 paragraphs. This is where you need to include references. DO NOT use direct quotes from sources; put the Information In your own words AND ADD REFERENCE. – Why did you do the experiment? What was the purpose? What were you looking at? Please don’t just say “…because It was the lab for the week” – State your hypothesis based on what you know about E. coIl: You may state this sentence “It was hypothesized that … ” This Is a statement, NOT a Question.
3.) Methods – Use paragraph form, DO NOT Include a list of steps for this section. Be sure to use past participle tense (I.e. avoid using first person: I~ we, .etc.). – Pay attention to detail: the more you include, the better! Someone without a lab manual should be able to repeat the experiment from just reading your methods section, so be specific; with names, procedures, etc. Be sure to name all equipment used and how. – Details should be In your own words, not the manuals.
4.) Results – The results section should include a graph with a description, as well as your results written out in paragraph form, DO NOT interpret your results here, but be sure to state the data. – Graph: You will need a line graph that plots the points from the ENTIRE DAYS LABS (provided by your instructor). The graphs MUST be made using EXCEL. – The Graph should include the following: Y-axis: Absorbance X-Axis: Time in Minutes Title Smooth curve connecting all plots Legend (a brief description explaining your graph)
5.) Conclusion – Interpretation of the class results AND your individual results. – Come up with possible explanations of unusual data points or possible problems with other influences on the data. , – Based on your results, would you support or refute your hypothesis? Either answer is fine, but make sure you explain why. This is a great place to RESTATE your hypothesis, please do not assume that I remember what it is. – Add a paragraph explaining what type of growth this experiment illustrates. Be specIfic and say it in a statement, do not skirt-around the word. If you found that it did not illustrate a specific type of growth, what type of growth should you have seen and what are some reasons you may not have seen it?
6.) Literature Cited – Use at least three sources from accredited journals (use PubMed.gov to search for relevant papers). Other examples of sources are your textbook or the lab manual. Be sure to properly site each source. Google Scholar will also help you find primary literature – Wiki, Google, and WedMD DO NOT COUNT as one of your three sources, however, you may use these as additional sources on top of your original three.
