Ancient Greek History
For this debate you can be any adult citizen of Athens. Imagine that the debate between Cleon and Diodotus is extended and you are addressing the assembly who will then vote on a course of action. Each group should have members of different social classes and economic standing. Use this background to inform the way you shape your speech/argument. Group Alpha is siding with Cleon and arguing for the execution of the rebellious Mytileneans and enslavement of the women and children. Consider why this is a good decision for Athens and her empire. What type of message does it send to the other cities in the empire? How might it advance Athens standing in the war? Who were those revolting on Mytilene? Did all Mytileneans support this decision? What might the consequences be if you do NOT execute and why might that be dangerous/harmful to Athens? Use the historical information weve discussed to frame your arguments. When preparing your debates, remember to use examples of logos, pathos, and ethos. While you dont need to incorporate all three into your speech, make it clear that you are using one of those strategies.
Be creative with it and add an ancient Greek name.
