Order Description
imagine what arguments you want to present as conclusion of the thesis; what is your take home message for the reader-examiner. The work backwards: how kind of data do I need to give me the best evidence to support my argument? what methods are the best to get me the data/evidence?
Once you have got the data and start analysing, you need to link what you are discussing and arguing with other people\’s arguments and findings. And that\’s where the literature review comes in. The dissertation needs to be coherent throughout and the conclusion and the introduction (where you set your research questions) need to tie together nicely.
1. to be very clear about the rationale of your proposed study – just because nobody has done exactly what you want to do isn\’t a good justification of your study. It needs to address a theoretical question and have a clear take-home message as a result of your study, i.e. people reading your study can see they have actually learned something which may apply to their own contexts. So if you are unsure model on an existing study, rather than creating something that nobody has done before.
2. Use an instrument (often mistaken to be the method) that will give you data which has enough interesting things for you to say in a 15,000-word dissertation. Remember, two thirds of the dissertation needs to be about your own work, not just reviewing other people\’s work. If you do a questionnaire and the answers are largely yes or no, or a choice of a, b, c, d, think how you are going to present and discuss the data. Are you going to have enough to say for about 8,000-10,000 words? Your data need to be rich and varied so that you have something interesting to discuss.
3. The choice of the topic can result in higher/lower marks for the dissertation, because some topics are inherently Uninteresting and you know the findings will not be of much value, so it doesn\’t matter what you do, you may not be able to get a high mark.
4. Plan your time carefully. You really need to get your data by no later than mid-June and start serious writing then. You can always write your methods and literature review now and revise afterwards according to what you have found. the lit rev needs to go together with your conclusions, i.e. review only those that are relevant to your findings. That\’s why you really need to know what you have found urgently, as soon as you can, so that you can start the dissertation. Without knowing what you can find and what you can argue, you have no dissertation at all.
