Take-Home Final Topics
Choose one of the topics below and write a 4-5 page (typed, double-spaced, 12pt font, one-inch margins) essay. Your essay should offer an analysis of the material, grounded in the details of your narrative. While you can and should feel free to summarize general aspects of plot, all your claims about how to interpret these materials should be supported through citations: quoted passages or dialogue.
There are numerous other novels, short stories, comics, films, and television series that, time permitting, I might have included on the syllabus, not to mention video games and music videos. This topic provides an opportunity for those of you who are familiar with and interested in a zombie apocalypse narrative not on the syllabus to write about that material. A few parameters and cautions: your essay should focus on an analysis of one Since your reader will not necessarily be familiar with that narrative, you must provide a concise but descriptive summary: Where and when is it set? Who are the main protagonists? What crisis or conflicts drive the narrative? Etc. You must be especially careful to situate what you quote again, your readers wont necessarily know how the passage or dialogue or panel fits into the context of the narrative unless you tell us. If you are working with a visual text, you must provide some images (screen captures; comics panel, movies stills) to provide a sense of the aesthetics (or look) of your narrative. Last and most certainly not least: your essay must link your selected narrative to the themes of this course. What does your chosen narrative have to say about contemporary capitalist societies? About social norms, consumer culture, stress, anxiety, and depression? About who does and doesnt count as (fully) human? About barricades, security, and necropower? About world-building, self-invention, and play? Obviously, your chosen narrative need not link to all of these themes but it must link to some.
walking dead,i am legend, down of dead, zombieland, warmbodies, 28 days later, zone one, world war z and land of dead are excluded.
