This is the task:
Choose a journal article/scientific text about an empirical survey in the field of communication or management research (e.g. Langzeitstudie Massenkommunikation), this has to be done in agreement with the examiner. Write a scientific thesis about this survey with 10 up to 12 pages, which works on and evaluate reflexive the following points:
– theoretical basis of the survey
– methodological approach and design of the survey
– results of the survey
The reflexive evaluation should be done with additional scientific sources.
Please note that for the assignment above paraphrasing and explaining the study you have chosen is not enough. Your job is to analyze the study in depth: How is it theoretically grounded, how it is methodologically done, how should the results be interpreted. So the task is an analytical one.
You should ask yourself and answer the following questions in your paper: How could the research question in the study been answered otherwise? Was the theoretical approach a good one? What could have been an alternative methodology (usually there are several ones)? How valid and reliable are the results (external and internal validity)?
-> You should show in your paper by using relevant terms that are explained in the pdf doucments in this course that you have studied the material.
Last hint: Coporate studies from PWC, KPMG, McKinsey etc. usually lack a theoretical base. They provide information on relevant topics but their goal is not theory development. This you find rather in pure scientific studies – sometimes explicitly sometimes more implicitly. You should keep this in mind when you choose a certain study.
