Culture, Communication and the Carnival of Crime

Order Description

Using the concept of Carnival, apply a cultural criminological textual analysis to an image.
The image of your choice can be either a photograph, a series of photographs, or a video which depicts the contemporary carnival of crime.
The idea is that you use the image as a focal point around which you can discuss the various theoretical concepts. Concepts you could choose (at least 3 to 5 concepts from the list) to work with include: The Civilising Process; The Sacred/Profane Dichotomy; Abjection; Taboo; Transgression; Impurity and Pollution; The Commodification of Crime; Rationality and Risk; Ethopolitics; Governing through Crime; Governance Through Publicity; Naming and Shaming; Crime and the Media; Abuse as Entertainment; The Commodification of Culture; Performance Crime; The Will to Representation; The Discursive Subjectivity; The Seductions of Crime; Hyper-Individualisation and Instrumentalism; Anelpic Zones; The Breakdown of the Pseudo-Pacification Process; Sociological Ambivalence; Edgework; Cultural Zones of Exception; Hate Crime; Hurt and Humiliation; State Crime, or Corporate Crime.
You could choose a picture of a delinquent gang, a train surfer, a famous serial killer, a television show, a drug user, a violent video game, a prison, an anelpic zone, etcetera.
Draw upon any (or all) of the texts we have studied throughout this course. Aim to demonstrate both your understanding of the various concepts and apply them.
draw references from peer-reviewed academic texts.
