M4D1: Musculoskeletal Disorder- A Patient Education Case Study
7 7 unread replies. 7 7 replies.
Module 4

A wise educator once said if its worth knowing, its worth looking up. This weeks discussion focuses again on a case study approach- researching a disease or injury, presenting the normal anatomy, explaining the pathophysiology associated with the disease or injury, and any pertinent information associated with it. The fun part is now which disease or disorder will you choose?

The outcomes addressed in this activity are:

Describe normal structure and function of the skeletal and muscular system (CO#1)
Discuss major disorders of the bones, joints, and muscles (CO#1, 2, & 4)
Explain preventative strategies to maintain bone and muscle health (CO#1, 2, & 4)
An active discussion is the key to an interesting and engaging online course. Discussion in this course is designed to simulate a classroom discussion. As others join in the discussion, you should read what has already been posted and continue on with the discussion from there. We will go through the questions one at a time, moving on to the next question once we have fully explored the current question. I will guide you through the discussions.

The modules in this course are one week in length. Time goes quickly, so remember to post early! Get in the habit of checking the discussions as often as you can to see what others have posted and to respond. The earlier in the week that you begin posting, the deeper the conversation and learning will be.

First, lets start with questions based on your opinion:

The musculoskeletal system is made up of two main components: the muscles and the skeleton. Yet there is no muscle doctor or skeleton doctor. Why do you think that is so? Why would it be important for the medical community to specialize even further? Please provide an example.
Next, after you have completed the readings and watched the videos for the module, complete the following:

Choose a disease or disorder of the muscular or skeletal systems.
Research the disease or disorder by finding at least one research article AND one reputable web site to inform your response.
Then, write your initial post as if you were educating a patient with no anatomy or physiology background, including:
What disease/disorder did you choose a why?
What system does it affect?
What is the normal anatomy of the affected area? (ex. If you chose tibia fracture, explain the normal structure and function of the legbut be sure to choose something much more interesting and in depth!)
What happens to the anatomy in the presence of this disease/disorder?
What are the symptoms, diagnostic tests/images, and treatments for this disease/disorder (and anything else a patient may want to know)
What preventative measures could improve the outlook for this patient? How can they protect the health of their bones and muscles? (This can be more generalized)
Cite your sources using proper APA 6th edition format
Then, choose two of your peers posts to respond to
To reply to your peers, focus on their explanation of the normal anatomy and pathophysiology of the disease/disorder. What works and what makes sense? Do their explanations answer all of your questions if you were the patient? If not, what more would you want to know? Be sure to be thorough yet constructive in your responses.

This discussion will be graded using a rubric. Please review this rubric prior to beginning the discussion. You can view the rubric by clicking on \”Discussion Rubric\” on the Course Rubrics page within the Start Here module. All discussions combined are worth 30% of your final course grade.

Consult the Discussion Posting Guide for information about writing your discussion posts. It is recommended that you write your post in a document first. Check your work and correct any spelling or grammatical errors. When you are ready to make your initial post, click on \”Reply.\” Then copy/paste the text into the message field, and click Post Reply.

To respond to a peer, click Reply beneath her or his post and continue as with an initial post.
