How will you ensure anonymity or confidentiality and how will you keep data safe?
Research Proposal Guidelines
You will be responsible for writing a research proposal on a topic of your choice. The proposal can be on any topic you are interested in as long as it is related to criminology or criminal justice. Some examples are below:
What causes police officer stress and how can it be reduced?
How do economic downturns impact criminal victimization?
What impacts support for capital punishment?
How do post-release programs impact recidivism?
The proposal must consist of the following components:
Title page
o Include the title of the paper and your name.
Abstract
Introduction
Literature Review and Hypotheses
Methods the following is a general outline; what you include will vary depending on your research question (3-4 pages)
o Who is your population and who will you be sampling? o What type of sampling design will you use?
o What will your sample size be? Why?
o IRB (if applicable)
How will you ensure anonymity or confidentiality and how will you keep data safe?
What are the potential risks to participants?
How do the benefits of the study outweigh the risks?
o What does your study look like (i.e. survey, experiment, program evaluation,
etc.)?
o The abstract will follow the title page. Only include the abstract on this page. Do not start writing the body of the paper. The abstract should be between 150 and 200 words. It is a summary of your proposal. Briefly discuss the research question, prior literature, and the methods you will use to answer your question.
o The introduction will introduce your research question and explain why it is important to answer the question. The introduction will be approximately one page or less.
o In the literature review, you will discuss previous research that is related to your topic. For example, if you believe that low self-control leads to crime, you would write a review of other studies that look at how self-control impacts crime. For this paper, you must use at least five scholarly sources. Scholarly sources include academic journals and books. Other sources may be used, but they will not count toward the five scholarly sources. You will conclude your literature review by stating your hypothesis (i.e. Based on the preceding review, I anticipate that individuals with low levels of self-control will be more likely to commit crime). This part of the paper will be between 5-7 pages.
Is it cross-sectional? Longitudinal?
Why is this type of study appropriate? o What are your measures?
Level of measurement
Unit of analysis
What are you actually measuring? What are your questions? (give actual
questions and response categories if applicable)
If you are creating a survey, the actual survey can be included as
an appendix at the end of your proposal (following the references) Include additional control variables if applicable
