UNIT THREE INTRODUCTION
Isms Communicating Across Cultures

There are issues that exist within each one of us. We often do not recognize these issues, yet they exist, and we need to reflect upon and work through them. We need to deal with our isms and understand the isms people own and/or develop culturally. This understanding is a key to effective communication and the development of effective multicultural ministry.

INTRODUCTION AND ALIGNMENT
The first item of business any new leader must accomplish is to define reality. Many leaders
approach the defining of reality in the organization she/he leads through utilizing a S.W.O.T.
analysis to assess the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. Each leader must then
decide where she or he will endeavor to lead the organization. Developing a vision strategy is
crucial to the organization being able to accomplish this endeavor.

The text Incarnational Ministry applies practical application of information regarding Societies.
Many people from throughout regions around the world migrate to urban areas forming diverse
populations. Understanding their worldview and is essential to effective ministry among them.
In the article, Worldview and Contextualization, David Hesselgrave writes, The Christian
accepts as axiomatic that his task is to communicate Christ to the world. That sounds simple
enough, but in fact it is very complex. It is complex for at least three reasons: first, there are
many views of \”Christ\”; secondly, there are many ways to \”communicate\”; and thirdly, there are
many \”worlds\” to which Christ must be communicated. In his article entitled, Hesselgrave
wrestles with the challenges confronting the sharing of the message of Jesus Christ for
Christians when communicating across cultures. This article is powerful and insightful
presenting a practical as well as academic perspective. This article will help you to continue to
develop your thinking in regard to multicultural ministry. It is an excellent and recommended
resource.
The Isms Part 1 Media Clip and PowerPoint are designed to share the challenges of isms
in the church. The media clip will include both the unit devotion and brief lecture introduction
to the unit.

3.2 THREADED DISCUSSION: ETHNOCENTRISM AND YOUR WORLDVIEW
INTRODUCTION AND ALIGNMENT
Looking at ourselves, churches and the society in which we live with our eyes open to the realities of racism and ethnocentrism brings to each of us the opportunity to give analysis to the church. Your conversation in this threaded discussion will explore and wrestle with this topic. This challenging topic is fundamental in thinking through our approach and potential productivity in accomplishing multicultural ministry.

During these past three weeks of study, dialog, reading and lecture you should be coming to realize the difficulties and challenges, as well as the benefits and opportunities of multicultural ministry. One of the greatest challenges is often our own view of the world. Each of us has the potential to be overly (or overtly) ethnocentric. While there is significance to the fact that cultural pride (self-worth and cultural worth) are important to the sustainability of a culture the reality is that too often in society, cultural pride moves to a level of animosity (sin). Interact with your peers by responding in conversation and sharing with one another any revelations and repentant moments you have had in your life and how understanding the challenges of ethnocentrism effects your own worldview, as well as life in the church.
