describe Modernisation and Development

Order Description

Assessment value: 40%
Length: 1,500 words

Critically explain the differences and similarities, if any, between development and modernisation.

This essay requires critical explanations. An explanation means that you need to define the concepts you are discussing by identifying the main aspects of each concept. Draw your definitions from academic sources. The definitions must demonstrate that you understand the concepts. Please do not use dictionary definitions.

A critical explanation means that you need to take a position on the topic. In other words, make a judgement after assessing the available evidence. This can mean challenging the information, pointing out flaws, or highlighting strengths. You could also consider questions such as the value of these theories or why they are important. The essay must have a thesis statement. Please do not simply describe your chosen theories. The thesis statement must refer to the subject of the essay (your chosen concepts) and state the position you have taken. For example, dont just write, This essay argues that there is a relationship between modernisation and development. This is a weak thesis as it does not provide a reason for the claim. A strong thesis statement would take the form, \”This essay argues that there is a relationship between modernisation and development because…\”

Essay Structure & Presentation

Include the full essay question as a title at the start of your essay.

Make sure the essay introduction has a thesis statement one sentence that tells the reader the core argument of the essay. Make this explicit by starting with the phrase, \”This essay argues…\” The introduction also needs to tell the reader what main points you will make in the body of your essay in support of your thesis.

Ensure the body of the essay addresses each main point in the order listed in the introduction. Your argument is easier to follow if each paragraph deals with a single idea or aspect of the topic. Each paragraph should have a topic sentence that tells the reader what the paragraph is about usually the first sentence. The rest of the paragraph should prove the claim made in the paragraph topic sentence using references and examples.

The essay conclusion should remind the reader of your thesis and sum up the main points referred to in the introduction and discussed in detail in the body of the essay. No new material should be included in the conclusion.

Direct quotes should not exceed 10% of the word count of the assessment. Only use direct quotes if these are the best possible choice of words to express a particular point. Instead, try to paraphrase.

This is a research essay and a minimum of eight sources should be included in the reference list. This is an academic essay so your references must be from quality peer reviewed scholarly or academic sources. I strongly recommend you use the Murdoch Library catalogue and databases to locate suitable online sources. Please do not use lectures as sources in your reference list. Only scholarly sources such as books, journal articles and reputable websites should be used. Wikipedia and YouTube videos are not appropriate sources. The first thing I do when marking your essay is look at the quality of the sources used.

Sound referencing is fundamental to university culture. Acknowledge all sources used in your assessment, and support any claims with references. In this unit it is a requirement that all students must use the Chicago Style of in-text (author date) referencing. Do not lose easy marks due to poor referencing. For more information about the Chicago Style see https://libguides.murdoch.edu.au/Chicago.

One of the objectives of an assessment is to adhere to the recommended word count. A margin of plus/minus 10% is permitted and penalties will be applied if the assessment word count falls outside these limits. Direct quotes and in-text references are included as part of the word count but the reference list is not included.

All assessments should be presented using a 12-point font and 1.5 or double line spacing.
