Order Description

This assignment allows you to investigate operations management in a real-world organisation (you choose), thereby reinforcing the applied nature of the subject. By researching the task in depth you are given the opportunity to show the knowledge and understanding that you have gained in operations management.

Your are to produce a written management report of 2500 words (+/-10%) which addresses the following tasks.
Describe and explain the operations processes of your chosen organisation (25%)
Evaluate the appropriateness of the operations processes in terms of their contributions to productivity, quality and overall effectiveness (25%)
Draw conclusions as a result of your explanation and evaluation (15%)
Discuss if the operations of the organisation can be improved. If you see opportunities for improvement, recommend some of the policies and strategies that could be applied to secure such improvement. If you do not see any areas for improving the operation, argue a convincing case from an operations management point of view for maintaining the status-quo. (25%)

Aims:
The aim of this module is to introduce the fundamental principles, philosophies and techniques of operations management. Operations management is viewed as central to the transformation process within an organisation (i.e. the conversion of inputs, such as labour and materials, into outputs, such as goods and services). Operations management is seen as equally relevant to both manufacturing and service provision organisations, whether in the public or private sector. The module will review the scope of operations management activities, and their impact on organisational performance.

Learning outcomes:
? be able to demonstrate the scope of operations management activities;
? be able to critique the link between operations management and strategy;
? be able to reflect on the key issues and challenges facing operations management;
? be familiar and critique the range of philosophies and techniques that pervade operations management (i.e. BPR, JIT, TQM and six sigma); and
? be able to apply these philosophies and techniques in the analysis and problem-solving of operations management case-studies;
