Compare/contrast ballet music of Stravinsky and Copland.

Compare/contrast ballet music of Stravinsky and Copland. Besides the ballet examples for each composer already included in the textbook (Rite of Spring/Stravinsky and Appalachian Spring/Copland), I am including another example for each(Firebird/Stravinsky and Rodeo/Copland). Watch video examples of all four ballets before starting the discussion.

For this discussion you need to focus on both the music and the choreography. For each scene:

Describe the character, timbre, and texture of the music.
Briefly describe the dancing – is it elegant? brutal? pretty? etc.
Does the choreography match/go with the music well? Give an specific example in support of your answer.
Does the scene make sense to you? Can you understand what is happening (in the story)? Why/why not?
Does this scene fit your idea of ballet? Of dance? Would you want to watch more? Why/why not?
Finally, make two judgments: 1) which ballet do you feel is most successful, in terms of both music and choreography, in conveying the story; 2) which ballet do you like the best (this could be because of the music, the choreography, or both)?
