What kinds of primary sources do they utilize (government documents, diaries, court records, visual, oral, material, and so on)
Historiographical Paper: (10 pages)
Choose a topic on which you write a historiographic essay. You have to clear the topic with the instructor before proceeding with your paper. In the paper, you should examine and discuss the main historiographical themes, problems and interpretations of your topic. What are the key works and historians for that topic? What are their key themes and interpretations? What kinds of primary sources do they utilize (government documents, diaries, court records, visual, oral, material, and so on)? What are their main questions, methods and conclusions? What problems and debates have these historians raised? Finally where do you stand on this historiographic issue: what might be your interpretative stance on your chosen topic? Are there other research questions that need to be asked on this topic?
You must discuss in full at least 10 books and/or articles. You should think ahead and work on a topic that you could work into a future seminar paper. I would recommend that you consult with appropriate History faculty for the area you choose to investigate. Bring in direct quotes and examples from your chosen books and articles to support your analysis. You must use full and proper historical style documentation throughout your paper. That means fully cited footnotes or endnotes throughout (with the proper use of Ibid. when appropriate). Your paper should have a title and title page. Be sure to also attach a correct bibliography page. See Turabian, A Manual for Writers.
