Discuss the issue of sustainability from a supply chain perspective.
address the issue of sustainability but from purely a supply chain perspective.
Sustainability in supply chains and procurement is a hot issue these days specifically in the public sector. In the western part of the world, government agencies have been quite active and various sustainability factors have been incorporated in the supplier evaluation framework that assures a longer term sustainable procurement. For example, there is a growing official commitment to sustainable procurement by the UK Government (Morgan, 2008), who wish to pave the way for the rest of the Europe. However, this is not limited to a certain part of the world, and in the East Asian states, reforms have been made in the public sector procurement to ensure Corporate Social Responsibility (Jones, 2011).
The sustainability issues are also considered very important by public organizations and various private companies are actively engaged in making sure that their supply chains are sustainable. One of such examples is exhibited in Leigh and Waddock (2006) from Sainsbury Plc., a major retailer in the UK. They have created a Total Responsibility Management (TRM) approach which makes sure that all key factors of sustainability and responsibility are integrated within their supply chain network.
